High Calling

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

In the film, Cheaper by the Dozen, Steve Martin's character, Tom Baker, decides to walk away from his dream of coaching college football because of the strain it has been on his family. When his boss asks if he'll have any regrets for such a decision, Baker says, "If I screw up raising my kids, nothing I achieve will matter much."

Jesus says it a different way: "But whoever causes one of these little ones . . . to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea" (Mark 9:42). In other words, raising children is a serious responsibility and privilege; we should treat it that way and give our best to this high calling.

The world says we ought to pursue degrees, titles, salaries, and accomplishments. But if you look intently into the eyes of your child, the things that are truly important will become clear. The title you hold will fade, and your accomplishments will someday be forgotten; it is the investment you make into the spiritual life of your children that will outlive you and carry on into eternity.

The first and most natural condition of things is for Christian parents to train up their own children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon

Our Example

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
James 1:5

Deuteronomy 5:29

A Sunday school teacher instructed her first grade students to draw a picture of God. Later, when the pastor stopped by the classroom, the students were eager to show him their drawings. One student had depicted God as a brightly colored rainbow. Another had drawn what looked like an old man emerging from a cloud. And another looked very similar to Superman. The best rendition though came from a little girl who proudly said, "I don't know what God looks like, so I just drew a picture of my daddy."

Obviously that little girl's father made it a priority to live out what he taught his daughter about God. What do your children see when they look at you? As parents, we can talk to our children about God as the day is long; but ultimately, it is our example that will teach them how to live.

If you feel you are not setting a Godly example for your children, get on your knees and ask God to help you grow in your relationship with Him because you cannot impart what you do not possess.

Take heed that the misdeeds for which thou correctest thy children be not learned them by thee.

I do agree with you Santa however, we must also lead by our example so if we don't show our children success and pursuit of the definate purpose they will not know what road to take and often times become undecisive possibly leading to failure or saying mom or dad you didn't pursue your dreams so why should I. So we really have to step lightly in the right directions with kids.
