The Home Business Network

I am new at trying to enter a home-based business opportunity. Can anyone give me some advice and pointers as to how to get started, and which companies to pursue and which ones to avoid?

Welcome Lynne - and please know that you are not alone. I spent months researching and looking before I found what was right for me. There are a couple of things I would strongly reccommend to you, though.

1.) Google and Internet Search any company you are considering - but do it thoroughly. MANY sites that claim to be experts or "scam-alert" sites have actually been set up by competitors and other businesses to make their own look better. Or, to sell you the "Perfect" get rich quick deal that will put your business on autopilot and make you rich while you sleep. Try to locate reputable sites including Better Business Bureau, Dun and Bradstreet, and even your local recorders office. And pay very close attention to the length of time the company has been around. Two complaints on file for a twenty year old company may be acceptable, while if the company is six months old that should be a red flag.

2.) Make certain you are comfortable with the person or people you will be working with. Try over a period of time to reach them for answers. You should never have a "hard sell" or "deadline" to make your decision. The last thing you want is to sign up, pay your money, and then hear the sound of crickets everytime you have a question or need some help. You need not only the person who introduced you to the business to be willing to help you, but others as well. Contact other team members or your sponsors' upline and see - are they accessible? willing? enthusiastic about helping you succeed?

3.) Look closely at the business model itself. Is there a great product or service? Or is it mainly about bringing other people in as representatives? Do you receive residual income? Or do you have to call the customers over and over again and re-sell them to continue your income flow? Are there inventory or purchase/sale requirements? If you do not sell 100 widgets, must you buy them personally to stay in business? Every company will have a website with success stories and testimonials. Find those in your area and make a call. Set up a lunch date if they are willing. Ask the questions - How much are you really making? How long did it take you to become successful? What would you do differently?

3.) Look inside your heart. You cannot sell carrot juice to millions of people if you have never eaten a vegetable in your life and do not believe in healthy living. If you are a stay at home Mom who only spends time with other stay at home Moms, chances are you will not have a ton of success marketing a state of the art "whatever" to Fortune 500 businesses, no matter how much your commission may be. Find your passion. There IS a business out there that will move you. Which one makes you excited and eager just hearing about it for yourself? While I do know for certain that it is what is inside you and how much you devote to your own business that will determine your success - I also know you have to believe it to achieve it. If you feel good about your product or service - those hard tiems when you don't want to go on (and they WILL happen!) will be much easier to get through.

I hope I have not overloaded you with this! But I am passionate about helping people make the right choice for them and be successful. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Lynne, Read different posts on this site. Its very informative and you'll find different work at home companies that are suggested by many of us. I've worked for wsol and west. There's also Live Ops, Alpine and many others. Now, I consider these to be "work at home" type of opportunities, simply working from your home. But if you are looking for a "home-based business" that may be something different. I consider that to be a business you are running out of your home. Like selling candles, providing a service, travel or insurance. Good liuck!
