There are three good reasons why a recession is an excellent time for the economy as a whole and they all have to do with the people who need success.
The first simple reason is that out of hardship and no hope comes the opportunist with a real need to sustain the essentials. In the 1980's European recession we saw the move from manufacturing to service industries because people had the desire to get off the benefit handout system and get into meaningful employment.
The second reason is that i…

I am in the beginning stage of my home business. I am very excited to see the progress that I will make at the end of the first 30 days. I am very optimistic about everything right about now. I do know that it's going to take alot longer than 30 days to actual see accountable results for my business. I like to keep small attainable goals- sort of like making a list and checking it off as I go. It gives me a sense of accomplishment to know that I am making progress and it keeps me motivated. Not…

If you are a new business owner and have hired someone to assist you, do you have a difficult gving orders or even asking for help from your workers? You are not alone.
Delegation is often hard for new managers to learn, says communication consultant Helen Wilkie of MHW Communications. She says new managers are accustomed to being “doers” and are uncomfortable telling other people what to do. Sometimes they think it’s quicker (and better) to do things themselves. Also, because they might be unc…

Talk about burning the midnight oil. The last two weeks was one when I apparently said yes to every event that came my way. Starting Monday morning I will pay dearly in time for that.
I have to laugh, when I retired from my 9 to 5 to work my home business full time, I promised myself that I would learn to say no. I have been pretty good but old habits can be hard to kick. But today I relaxed. Author Toni Morrision is supposed to have said, "
If you surrender to wind, you can ride it." I l…

The need to be available is now creating so many tools for home businesses and in some cases many appear to the outside worl much larger than they are because they have begun to develop a large scale media presence.
Recently a colleague explained how he spent at least twenty minutes a month on prime time news when it came to consumer profiling and spending habits, he is viewed as an authority.
It wasn't his google placement but his YouTube and video content.
Some of the contact times were odd…

As I paid for my purchases at a store the other day, the checker thanked me and told me to have a nice day. Pretty usual stuff. But it suddenly struck me that the checker had - at a very fundamental level - made the choice to actively create something positive in an ordinary moment that he had some control over. And that's when I began to notice an active web of incredible kindness working to be born into existence every day, everywhere -- just from ordinary work-a-day interactions.
Of course w…

Personal Organisation is always a difficulty for colleagues who have tried working from home. They find the remote activities difficult to program into their day.
When I set up a company a few years ago I created a hot desk policy and remote server access for all the staff including me, encouraging everyone to balance the customer contact time with the adminstration and planning activities. Most of the report writing could be done in the comfort of their own homes and I set up a budget for the…

Its amazing to think back on the path that my business and I have been down.
When I first started making jewelry, I was hooked on seed beads and dedicated all my free time to learning new bead-weaving patterns and creating intricate pieces that took 20-100 hours each to complete. Free time at that point was a luxury, as I was raising 4 little boys on my own. It could take me months to complete a piece and was worth every minute of the time. I still pick up a needle whenever I need to relax and…
