As I paid for my purchases at a store the other day, the checker thanked me and told me to have a nice day. Pretty usual stuff. But it suddenly struck me that the checker had - at a very fundamental level - made the choice to actively create something positive in an ordinary moment that he had some control over. And that's when I began to notice an active web of incredible kindness working to be born into existence every day, everywhere -- just from ordinary work-a-day interactions.
Of course we all deserve good customer service, all the time. But what happens if we acknowledge -- even just to ourselves -- the value of someone's good intentions, small though they may be? For me, it gives me tangible hope that the world can become a better and better place. Although I am a stranger to many I encounter on the phone, the web or in person, I am touched by their intentional kindness: As they freely give it away they are also making something of incredible value.
And on we go...
