It's Independence Day, and here I am writing in a space where independent contractors are creating a life that works for them -- and not for a corporate king. Perhaps this would impress the Founding Fathers (and Mothers, thank you Abigail Adams et al). But I think it is now more important than ever to recognize how interdependent we actually are.
I say we are and always have been interconnected, even if we act as if we don't affect one another. We have all heard that when one molecule changes it affects all the other molecules around it, causing a chain reaction. Hence the ancient understanding that when you change yourself you change the world.
This century, it is clearer and clearer that this is true, as we see the earth getting smaller. There was such a cool article in the San Francisco Chronicle yesterday, about how the most remote tribe on earth is protecting it's independence -- and the rainforest that we are all dependent on - through a dependence on google earth:

That's interdependence in the best way. And in the inevitable way as we realize how we are bound to one another technologically, but also energetically.
But here's the full circle, timeless truth of it all:
independence is what makes
interdependence rich and healthy. Because when we are masters of ourselves, we are free to do our best for others.
So a toast to our independence! And our interdependence! While you remember to have your own integrity and boundaries don't forget that "they" is "us." Here's to a healthy and whole life for the unit and the collective.
